Welcome to the1810cookbook website!

This website links to a cookbook of 155 recipes and remedies compiled by Jane Winnington-Ingram from 1810 onwards and published, 201 years later, by her great-great-great-grand-daughter Verity Walker.  The 1810 Cookbook is sold in aid of BIM Projects, which runs classical music events for the Scottish Highlands.

Out now it features a fascinating 5 page full colour article on cooking from the 1810 Cookbook.  Verity went down to Arisaig House near Mallaig (fab country house hotel jointly run by her cousin Sarah Winnington-Ingram and her sister Emma Weir) for the photoshoot in October with writer (and deputy editor) Natasha Goodfellow and photographer Andrea Jones.  Great fun cooking the boiled almond pud among other recipes!   More on www.homesandantiques.com very soon.

If you have a comment or a query about any recipe (for example if you can't make out a word, or you have want to know what an ingredient is) then you can post them on the recipe pages once you have logged in (which is of course free) via the recipe pages.

You can also post your own version of a recipe (or remedy) online.  Again, just use the comments section on the recipe pages.  If you're quick you might even be the first to do so.

If you'd like to try a recipe, just click on one you fancy from the index and see whether anyone has posted a modern version. If not, you can always buy a copy of the1810cookbook via this site and be the first to try it in 200 years!  If you buy one of our first editions, you'll be supporting the Black Isle Mozart Requiem weekend workshop in November 2011 (see 'more info').

All website postings will be have to be checked, so please don't be disappointed if your comment or recipe does not appear immediately. We'll add them just as soon as we can.

Some of the recipes are in fact for medicinal remedies and are presented primarily for historical interest rather than practical use.  Many of these contain opiates such as poppy syrup or laudanum, sometimes mixed with turpentine or brandy.  Please use common sense as to which of the1810cookbook recipes you decide to try!
